Hey Karl. What I've found to be the best method for youtube is to corner your niche. That and mass videos. Youtube is great for building your image. Make as many as videos as possible but don't just wing it. Try to have a plan on what you want your message to be. Hope this helps!

I am on the first page for several keywords, for example "earn money online with clickbank" and I received 4k views in a year.
One video is definitely not effective but I have explored the market and with a few targeted quality videos I'm sure that you could sell a product.

Before you broadcast yourself

When it comes to advertising using Youtube keep a few things in mind. Youtube is a double edge sword. When used correctly it can be very profitable or it could be detrimental for your career. Be careful with the kind of products you promote. 1st find out if there isn't anything negative being said already about the product on Youtube. It becomes more challenging to sell a product once it builds a bad reputation. Also your image and credibility can be destroyed once people see your face all over the internet.

Well, I would suggest looking at what the highest ranked videos in your 'niche' use for keywords, you can build off there success by showing up on the side because you have the same keywords...and well...maybe get a few buddies to make a few positive comments on the bottom of your video...that could help get the ball rolling a bit...a crowd does draw a crowd!

I had fun making videos but don't think I can handle using it as an advert tool any more -it's so saturated and how do you keep coming up with fresh ideas for videos (or maybe i'm just lacking in creativity...)

We blew up on the internet from YouTube. Now we are slowly trying to convert all our viewers to our main website.

Might I add that we have views in the Mid upper 8 figures.

Any help on how to really transfer traffic would be appreciated as well. This should be a sticky for the YouTubers.

Youtube is very effective, I have a friend of mine that uses only Youtube to drive traffic to his site and he makes a great deal of money each day. 90% of his revenue comes from Youtube he told me.

I think it depends on your niche.

But if done correctly, YouTube is pretty awesome.

For one thing, make sure that you have a URL in the first words of your description. Something like: Internet Marketing Forums - Where Great Internet Marketing Ideas Are Born presents: blah blah blah. YouTube automatically hyperlinks the URL. It's a nofollow link, so no PR love from YouTube, but it does give viewers a direct way to go from YT to your site! (knowing this, you can even craft your videos to have people click on the link to the right of the video, or at least 'Annotate' your videos to say that on YT.)

As always, test, measure, tweak...
