I am an online marketer. I recently got a client who wants me to do Social Media Marketing only. It is a relatively new field for me. I have been researching a lot on social media marketing these days, but am still not confident on how to go about it.

Can you please help me out in this and give some valuable suggestions and advice? Also, I came across this information about a workshop on Social Media Marketing (Social Media Workshop by Dave Evans) by Dave Evans (who is perhaps very renowned in this field and has also written a book—Social Media Marketing-an hour a day). I’ll be attending the workshop. Please tell me how much can that workshop help me?

Here are a few ideas, I am sure there are many others, but this should get you going some.

1. I would start out by identifying if there are any of the web 2.0 / social medial sites that cater to your niche.
2. Open up user accounts at the top 10 - 20 social media /social bookmarking sites. NOTE, when setting up your user account always try to get the username as close to your primary 2 word keyphrase as possible. This will help in SE Rankings.
3. At the social media sites craft well written profiles with your clients info using any brands etc. as well as placing links to their homepage.
4. Start making posts on the social media sites regarding your services or product. Offer something of value to them for free. A report, a piece of softward etc. Get them coming to your site (free download area) first and then work them towards a paid product or service.
5. Bookmark your posts that you make at the social media sites, your profiles etc on the social bookmarking sites that you signed up for.

This is just a small sample of what to do to get started. Hope it helps.

What are your clients SPECIFIC goals...have you devised a particular strategy?...without this SMM can be a HUGE waste of time...what is your client really after?...trust, credibility, leads...etc

You need to find out exactly what they are looking to achieve and what the term 'social media' means to them.

Are they talking about setting up facebook and myspace pages and updating them?

Are they talking about interacting with clients via applications like Twitter?

Are they talking about getting their site to go viral and get Stumbled and social bookmarked?

You need to know exactly what they are looking to achieve and then find a simple system to create accounts at all the necessary sites and syndicate content from your client to them easily and quickly.
