I think the most important thing you can do is to start off with top quality content. You can do all the things you listed and jump in PR quickly but if you have lousy content, your ranking will drop back down just as quickly.

Compelling title. But we should accept the fact that there's no shortcut to success, that's why patience is very much needed no matter how sure-fire our methods may be.

As an addition, getting active in social media / social networking sites are also good. It's cost efficient and only requires hard work and patience, as in most methods.

But finding keywords which have no competition like the one I used above is harder but completely possible. Try using the Google Keyword Tool and search for terms related to your niche.

Try writing an article with a term that has around 800 - 1000 searches a month... You have more chance of getting a good listing (with some relevant traffic) to your site.
