I think PPC and the most popular is google adwords and you can advertise your web site by social networking site free classified ads many way to advertise your site.

I would agree the best thing to do is start a blog, then get as much traffic to it as possible, using things like feedjit.com which is free, plus writing good blog posts and getting your blog listed in directories.

With PPC advertising you can almost instantly put your ads on major search engines including Yahoo or Google. You can also give them a monthly budget, which will cap your payments. That way, if your clicks go over a certain amount, they will pull them off and you won't end up having to pay more than you expected to.

In fact it all depends how much money you are willing to spend on your campaign and what kind of things you are selling.
Certainly PPC at Google works fine, but it can be a costly affair and you're only guarantee is you are getting visitors.
There must be stats how many visitors you need to get 1 sale or new sign up from, but my experience is if you score 0,5% that's not a bad result.
Is paying the costs for PPC worth it when you are not making an enormous profit on a sale ? In other words, I don't think PPC is working when selling cheap items.

When it's your own website (no affiliate marketing) it's most important to use good keywords in your metatags, that way you can get a good ranking at search engines.
And of course it's recommended to exchange links, that always works fine ;-)
