Social Bookmarking Sites

When My Space burst on the Internet scene like a holiday fireworks
spectacular, the entire Internet changed to accommodate this flashy, newcomer to the Web. Soon after, social bookmarking sites started springing up everywhere, some were just online communities with no specific focus and others had a definite niche focus.


Searching Google for a list of social bookmarking sites returned over 500 sites to visit and join. There's a social bookmarking site to attract almost every interest anyone ever had. As a marketing tool this online phenomenon has no competition because of the sheer numbers of monthly visitors to almost any of them.

Social bookmarking marketing is a method of promoting your product, brand or even yourself by making yourself and your business known across several social bookmarking sites. While this technique is not lightening fast, it is very effective and will produce traffic to your site. The key concept here is that social marketing is not designed to immediately boost your business income, but provide the visibility you need for conversions from visitor to buyer.

Digg.com is the most popular of the social bookmarking sites and the definite leader in the number of monthly visits, which is estimated by Quantcast to be 25 million unique visitors on any given month. Take a deep breath and read that again...25 million unique visitors a month. Tap that fountain of traffic and you would have something going on your site that would keep you awake for weeks.


One of the major benefits of marketing through social bookmarking sites and
using their tags to promote your website, blog or Squidoo lenses is the back-links you will receive when some of those 25 million visitors tag your site. Search engines love one-way inbound links and consider them an indication of the popularity of your site.


Each site has different requirements for creating your profile and for marketing your products with blogs, articles, etc. Join some that look interesting to you because of the content or amount of activity or focus.


Take your time and get involved in some of the activities that make each social bookmarking site unique. When you are comfortable start submitting articles or your blog posts to the site and make it easy to make comments.

Invite your friends to join and send "shouts" to them whenever you post
something new to any of the ones you joined. If you have a good giveaway, check the rules for each site and offer it as a free download to the members wherever you can.

A few other things you will want to keep in mind when promoting affiliate marketing programs and blogs through social bookmarking:
  • Timing is everything. Articles that get at least 25 votes within the first 15 minutes will rise through the social bookmarking ranks faster than articles that get 25 votes in two days' time.
  • Opening several accounts on one social bookmarking site so that you can vote for yourself should be avoided. This will only damage your reputation if you are promoting your own blogs and affiliate marketing programs.
  • Get your friends to help. This is the easiest and best way to promote your blogs and affiliate marketing programs through social bookmarking.
When done properly, social bookmarking can be an effecient and cost-effective PR tool to get traffic to your website and promote your small business.

Some good advice and I agree with momonline
Take your time and get involved in some of the activities that make each social bookmarking site unique. When you are comfortable start submitting articles or your blog posts to the site and make it easy to make comments.

Also, don't just bookmark your own sites as this is a big no no, look for people in your niche and bookmark similar sites, too.That way you won't come accross as a Spam king when Google passes by ;-)

You mentioned Social Bookmarking sites, however you mentioned social networks as well. So I am commenting on both.

There is a difference between links and traffic. And there is a difference between good traffic and just traffic.

Not all bookmarking sites are the traffic you want. I personally believe Digg traffic is horrible because they actively avoid monetization on your site. Unless you get paid for impressions or are giving away free stuff, Digg is a tough crowd to convert.

I find eBay traffic to be the best social traffic, from eBay Groups, Discussions, and Classifieds. They convert when they see a deal.

I avoid Squidoo for building links for SEO. Google ignores tags as links as of last year. It can be good for building traffic in a very unique niche. It converts decently for that.

Don't forget building your LinkedIn profile, especially if you are a blogger. Google loves LinkedIn.

And last, but certainly not least, join blogs for developing sustainable traffic, particularly when building a list.

Just my two cents.

the best way i do it is to import my bookmarks along with my site that way it makes it look like you are not just a shameless self promoter (I have 200+ bookmarks, but most people have fewer).

I have found that it is better for newer sites that are looking to get crawled in Google quickly. Whereas I think it is fairly based on luck for sites looking to get traffic.

Its definitely in its infancy and I think 2009 will see the best new strategies emerge for it as a successful online tool.
