Need Your Comments

We would love to get your input concerning our next move. We here at Whats This Web Thing know many people in the web development and internet business arena. Collectively, we will get together over a few beers from time to time and help each other uplift our enterpreneurial spirits. One idea that has been batted around has been ad networks - to be more precise, local ad networks.

An ad network, or an advertising network, is a company that connects website owners to online advertisers. They also pay software developers and webmasters money for their ads to be shown when people use their software or visit their websites. It holds ads in an online advertising inventory generated from advertisers who would like to spread their advertisement to different websites. The people who are administrating these network services are called Advertising Agents or Ad Agents.

Our ad network would bring businesses together with our network of websites whose mutual location is the same city or town. Local businesses can create brand awareness and get highly targetted customers and local website owners would be able to monetize their websites and blogs to increase revenue. It seems to make sense since most small businesses like plumbers or electricians have customers who probabaly live within 50 miles of their business. Why not advertise on all those local websites in any given city.

As mentioned earlier, ad networks generate revenue from advertisers who employ them to run their advertisements to related websites or software that conspires with them as well. In return for the use of a space in your web page, you will receive a share of the advertisers’ revenue collected by these ad networks.

Ad networks usually offer you three ways to get paid: the cost per click method, the cost per thousand impressions or cost per action method.

•Cost per click method. In this method, you will get paid every time an ad has been clicked and viewed sourcing from your site.

•Cost per thousand impression method. The cost per thousand impressions will generate revenues for you every time a page has been viewed a thousand times.

•Cost per action method. In the cost per action method of payment, you will get your revenue accordingly when your visitor follows a link from your website and takes the advertised action.

So here is the idea again in a nutshell. Any given city of somewhat signicant size has many local websites - ranging from sports and television to politics and from forums to business and all with a local flavor. These sites I am sure are in various states of financial profitability or loss. Also from within any given city are a myriad of local small businesses who would just love to reach more customers in their area but using the internet whose reach is worldwide, is difficult especially when a local business only wants to target people from their area. But like advertsing in local newspapers and the yellow pages, a local ad network would bring all those local sites with their local visitors to the local business. Any local business would be adding a new and inexpensive advertising tool to their arsenal of weapons sort to speak. They would be extending their reach to local customers. At this point we haven’t decided on the appropriate first city to start with.

So we want your comments. If you own a website or a small business whether it be online or brick and mortar tell us what you think. And if you dont own a small site or business, tell us what you think anyway? We would love to hear. Either answer in this forum or come to the site, whichever is easier. We would really love to hear from you.
