Link building is the key for an effective SEO campaign. This works best for PR and SERP. Always provide useful and relevant content in your websites niche as this will help in quality organic linking - sites will naturally link to your site once they see unique and helpful information in your site. Keep in mind that the more targeted backlinks you build for your site, the more likely it will bring in the right visitors that could make the conversions for better revenue. You do targeted link buidling for fast and long term traffic to your sites.

There are several ways to build links. Here are just some of the following:

Directory Submissions - targeted links at high PR directories
Blog and Forum Postings - to high PR and frequently crawled sites
Social Bookmarking

In linking to get ranked well in Google, the links are best if they are relavent to your websites main theme.

I think that is right ..BUT.. imagine this:

You want to buy a BMW, so:

1. You go to work each day and every BMW you see, has a sticker on it:
BEST BMW with the phone number...

In fact, you saw 50 BMW's and ALL of them were sold by that SAME dealership

2. Your family members and friends you REALLY trust, they also have the exact BMW you want. They all tell you about this specialty BMW dealership and this salesman and the deal they got and they go on and on about it...

Everyone you REALLY trust tells you to see this guy/girl at that dealership you didn't know about.

What you have read is how Google determines the relevance of a site. They rank a site based on:

Link Reputation ( your family and those your REALLY trust telling you about the BMW dealership)

Link Popularity (the shear NUMBER or times you see BMW's with that other dealership's tag)

The search engines will rank a site based on either of the above. A LOT of links - related or not ..or a few HIGH Quality Links from Authority (Page Ranked) sites.

You can rank either way. But I agree, Link Reputation is better IF you can get themed links. Link Popularity is easier because getting a high value or themed site to give you a link may not be easy at all.

You are right link building is the key of SEO campaign. But every thing depend on quality back links if you make quality back links for your website then it works best for PR and SERP.

i think the quality of your links help you more than the quantity of your links.
a site that have just 5 links from well reputed websites will rank higher than one with 20 links from useless websites.

the thing here is that it is not always easy to get links from this well reputed sites, so it is always better to start with the small sites, then gradually you can keep climbing the ladder as you site increases in page rank. when you are comfortable enough, ask yahoo webmaster to link to your site!!!! just kidding there
