Google is the number 1 search engine. Hence it can send the most organic traffic.
So everyone tries to get in top 10 listings on Google's result page. In order to do that, marketers need to optimize their pages for Google. Donna

I agree with you Donna, 100%...but there are a few exceptions to the Google "rule", as you may know... Here is an example:
I have a site that ranks #1 in Google, above 92,000,000 competing results. I have a site in the same market that is found nowhere in Google, but has a high Alexa ranking and a high ranking on MSN and Yahoo. I have a third site that is totally new, has no ranking ANYWHERE (yet), and I use some custom traffic generation tools that may be deemed "aggressive" (yeah, I can be a bad boy sometimes). The Google site comes in dead last ...by a WIDE margin. I think if you can get a site ranking and indexed well in Google, it is a good thing. It gives us bragging rights and it looks very impressive when I show a client all of the things I can do with Google. And if rankings and bragging rights were money, I'd be a gazillionaire. But I think the idea behind SEO is not a goal onto itself. SEO's goal is for you to make money with your site by attracting as much free, high quality traffic as you can. Generally, Google can give that to you, they have more of it then anyone else, site for site that is. I like them too :-) BUT, if you take the cumulative results of a lot of smaller sites and compare them with your results from Google, the ease and time it took to get where you wanted to be on Google....well, a lot of marketers are adding up the totals, and finding out that the Big G and Google oriented SEO may not be the only Girl in town :-) Just a thought........

Google For SEO
Yes I agree although I think Alexa rankings are really meaningless as they
are skewed towards internet marketers and depend on someone who visits your site having the Alexa toolbar installed (mainly IMers). Personally I use Web 2.0 (blogs, social networking, social bookmarking, video sites, podcasts, RSS, etc.) to get tons of traffic to my sites and don't even bother with SEO that much. Donna

So, we both agree that Google is not the main way of getting traffic...glad you agree that today/s Internet offers a LOT more than Google. And you are right about your method of getting tons of traffic. Some people may find your method MORE profitable than SEO for Google.
All in all... a top 10 listing in Google is GREAT if you have a competitive term and enough traffic to that term. And I'll bet that your Web 2.0 (blogs, social networking, social bookmarking, video sites, podcasts, RSS, etc) methods offer you LESS headaches, more targeted traffic at a lower cost - both time and money, than Google does. agreed?

Web 2.0 vs Google
I absolutely agree. And I never worry when Google "dances".
Although it is nice to be in top 10 if for nothing more than bragging rights. ![]() Donna

Although the published statistics say Google occupied 60% of the market, I believe the real statistics is much higher. Just look around you, everyone is using Google and not Yahoo or Bing. That's why if someone can do good SEO in Google, it is already more than enough to attract tons of traffic and make lot of money.

Google is the best. It drives more traffic, it has many application that you could use and it's credibility and reliability is tested.

When it comes to traffic from the search engines then Google will always deliver more traffic as it receives more searches than any other search engine.
If more people use Google than any other engine then Google will always be able to deliver more traffic than the other engines. BUT Googles does not own the internet and there is more 'passive' traffic available on the net than Google receives and handles. What I mean is that there are websites that people visit without first using Google to search for the site (eBay, MySpace, YouTube, FaceBook, Twitter, etc) There is more traffic on these sites than there are people searching on Google. Google should not be your only traffic source but it should be one of them. |
