I found a site with thousands of free e-books, but is it even legal to sell these e-books? Some of them dont even have an auther written anywhere, and nothing telling you not to edit or sell them.

Unless they come with Resale Rights, you cannot sell them. If they come
with Giveaway Rights you can GIVE them away but not resell them.
If they come with PLR then you can edit them.

If there is nothing about rights, you cannot resell them, give them away
or edit them in any way.

I agree, I wouldn't mess with them, unless you know for sure what you can or can not do with them. Course sure you already know that now. Sadly many people give away stuff they are not suppose to give away in the first place. You probably guessed that already as well

On the other hand, be aware, not all rights are the same. For one PLR rights can vary greatly, I've seen some you can't edit, ect.
