What are the advantages of having a dedicated IP address or a shared one when selecting a web host?

The biggest advantage to having a dedicated or shared IP server account is that you don't have to worry about your account being deleted for making downloadable products available.

I have personally been down this road switching from host to host all because I wanted to run an online ebook business that delivered products via download.

Now, I have a VPS and am very satisfied with the control I have over my alloted space and ultimately, I have say over what is done with said space(so long as it is legal ).

If you are wanting to get into the resale rights/downloading biz, this is an option you should really give some thought on before you throw your money down the toilet as I did!

I have read an article that said, in the past Google has punished people that share a IP with bad sites. Has anyone experienced this in practice?
