There are so many ways to make money online that if you try to tackle them all, you will end up spending WAY more than you make. My suggestion for someone just starting out such as yourself is to do your research. Even if it's a opportunity that looks unbelievable...it just might be.

If you would like my suggestion, I would start with affiliate marketing. If you dont know what this is just Google it and you will find a ton of stuff on the topic. Tip: Join an affiliate program that you have an interest in. It will be much easier to make money that way.

Assuming you already have a website the first place is in forums. Contribute first, help out and ask questions.

Next do social networking in places like Myspace, Face book and Twitter. These places are not marketer friendly, they are a community. You need to contribute first and make friends and you can post links back to your website on those sites. But theses sites are more about socialising so you need to 'act' that way on them.

Book Marking is another way which is also free. All the above are free ways too. With bookmarking you can add a lot of bookmarks to different social sites simultaniously.

You can also submit your website to the search engines [google, MSM, Yahoo].

Making money online isn't as easy as it seems - although you could do freelance-related work, where you would be paid by people to do specific jobs; let's say creating an XHTML & CSS compliant template or doing manual directory submissions. I recommend the DigitalPoint forums for advertising the freelance services you may want to provide: Webmaster Forum - Internet Marketing & Search Engine Forums and NamePros.Com - Buy, Sell, & Discuss Domain Names. You could learn HTML, XHTML & then CSS and do freelancing jobs by making templates, etc.

Another way is creating your own web site hosting with interesting & unique content - maybe a web site hosting with articles about the subject you are most experienced in and adding advertisements on there. Advertisements are kind of like TV ads but like banners or text-like banners and you get paid when one of your visitors click on it. I recommend Google Adsense for this kind of advertising (www.google.com/adsense) but there are others that are less strict like Online Contextual Advertising and Behavioral Marketing Service for Advertisers and Webmasters or BidVertiser - Pay Per Click Advertising On Sites Of Your Choice..

Think of something you could learn... maybe like HTML & CSS as I suggested above or do something like creating new blog articles for people, etc. By the way, the best place to learn HTML & CSS is Learn HTML

So you want to work from home and be your own boss... thats the best way to earn money from home... Home Based business has lots of advantages and also disadvantages... Advantages are that you can be successful n a very short span of time IF you are smart to handle the business... Disadvantage is a whole lot of concentration has to be given to your business at the initial stages to ensure your success...

Look for products that offer a tutorial format and reasonable price. Most of the good programs will give you a free bonus to see if you like the style. there is a lot of information out there about affiliate marketing, writing ebooks, etc. I recently have nearly completed a tutorial that cost about $2000 but what I have learned is amazing. I think with a budget of $500 to get started you can subscribe to some good products, pay for a domain name and hosting and get started. Best advice - go for the ones with some free bonus so you can test dri ve the program before you buy.Good luck!

I would suggest promote affiliate products, and find the products that have high markets, for example in today's holiday season, promote products from amazon that are in demand and they can use as gifts for the upcoming Christmas season..
