What language is best to start programming in?
I'm not completely new to programming, but I've been finding it difficult to choose 1 program to stick with. Here's what I'm looking for:
Something relatively easy. Something I can make GUIs in. Something I can program hardware in (PIC/ Picaxe). Something I can make simulations in. Something versatile that I can use in a wide variety of things. Please, no C#, Alice, Scratch, or Greenfoot. I understand that this is a broad range, so multiple answers are ok.

My own programming experience isn't extensive enough to know of one that fits all your requirements. Java is currently one of the big, most popular up and coming languages and it is pretty versatile. However I don't know about hardware, and the object orientated approach does not suit everyone. For some its perfect-intuitive, and easy, but I found it hard.

I'm not a programmer, but I do contract out a lot of programming jobs. Having had programs made in Java, Visual Basic, C++, and others, my favorites (as a consumer) have turned out to be: C++ and Delphi. The primary reason I like getting programs in these languages is that they are usually very small/portable, and usually don't require runtime files. In other words, I can click and run them without installation. Not sure if that makes a difference to you.

I have been programming in Java for years and I suggest you can start with it. It is powerful and flexible. There is a huge community out there to support you in whatever situation you are faced in.
Also, after you have done much programming, you will probably agree with me that all programming language are similar. The concept is the same, only the syntax is different. You can then switch around to the best language for your specific task. |
