Post What should I use as my website's dimentions?

I'm creating a CSS- based website and need some help with the graphics. I'm essentially making the website with photoshop and using css code to stich the images together to create a web layout. First of all, is this safe practice (ie a good way to design websites). And consequently, what size should I be designing for? There's no way to real-time scale images, that means i have to have a static background? How will it work with most people's screens?

If you are refering to using one big graphic, and then splitting it up into pieces to create the same image for a website, then I would say no that isn't a very good way to go about it. If you are talking about designing a header, a footer, and maybe a left and right side images and piecing them together with css then I would say that is ok. Just remember that the more images you have the slower your page will load. A lot of things can be done just by using a small slice of the image and using css to repeat it either horizonally or vertically, or both. You can also use background color in css to do a lot of things without even using an image file.

It all depends on what you are trying to do that determines if you need an image file or not. Good luck and I hope this has helped

Sorry I forgot to mention dementions. I design my sites that are not a fixed width to have the same layout in a 800 x 600 resolution as they do for higher resolutions. Fixed width sites I design the layout for a width of 1024 pixels.

Waytovietnam,

If you want graphics in your web pages, the best way is to use photoshop slices tool and separate image in parts.

My web site has liquid width of web pages. But for clients I design with fixed width. For screen resolution of 1,024 x 768 I use 980 px width of web pages, because of left and right margins and right vertical scroll bar.
