I would like to create a nice eBook cover for my website. What software are the gurus using1 and what is the best?

If you know of any free eBook cover creator software which do not have any watermark on the final product, do share too.

I use two different programs but they are not free. I have yet to see a good one that is free. Can't say there is none, just have'nt come across one myself. Maybe some one else will know of one.

I use GIMP. It's as powerful as Photoshop, but it's FREE (GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program).

Depending on where you are in the learning curve, both GIMP and Photoshop take a while to learn. Once you start to grasp it, though, boy you can make some really cool stuff.

I have an eBook about how to use GIMP to make eBook covers. Seriously. I created it because I was asking the same question you are. I wanted to make my own covers but didn't want to buy Photoshop or the 'Action Scripts' that they use to make the covers...and the 'free' cover generators online produced crappy covers.

I had used GIMP for a while to make other graphics (banners, etc.), but couldn't figure out how to do the cool 3D covers.

I worked with a buddy of mine who is a graphic guru. Together we figured out how to do it on GIMP, and documented the process. Then we added some resources (like where to find high-quality, license-free graphics), and included a few sample template files and bundled them together.

I've used LaughingBird software for e-book design. It was inexpensive and made a nice spine and backcover too. I don't think the newer version (don't have that yet!) has a watermark, but I'm sure if you checked out the web site you could find out.
